representation of the proximity and social interactions of different members of a hypothetical community. Jon M. Jachimowicz et al. studied how trust in one’s community influenced the long-term decisions of low-income individuals. Using archival data and laboratory studies that included more than 6,000 participants, the authors found that low-income individuals with higher levels of community trust made fewer shortsighted decisions. A subsequent 2-year, 1,447-person study designed to increase community trust in rural Bangladesh revealed that individuals in treated communities had higher levels of community trust and made fewer shortsighted decisions than individuals in control communities. Distinct unfolding and refolding pathways of ribonuclease a revealed by heating and cooling temperature jumps.
Heating and cooling temperature jumps (T-jumps) were performed using a newly developed technique to trigger unfolding and refolding of wild-type ribonuclease A and a tryptophan-containing variant (Y115W). From the linear Arrhenius plots of the microscopic folding and unfolding rate constants, activation enthalpy (DeltaH(#)), and activation entropy (DeltaS(#)) were determined to characterize the...
متن کاملPressure-jump-induced kinetics reveals a hydration dependent folding/unfolding mechanism of ribonuclease A.
Pressure-jump (p-jump)-induced relaxation kinetics was used to explore the energy landscape of protein folding/unfolding of Y115W, a fluorescent variant of ribonuclease A. Pressure-jumps of 40 MPa amplitude (5 ms dead-time) were conducted both to higher (unfolding) and to lower (folding) pressure, in the range from 100 to 500 MPa, between 30 and 50 degrees C. Significant deviations from the exp...
متن کاملKinetic and thermodynamic studies of the folding/unfolding of a tryptophan-containing mutant of ribonuclease A.
Tryptophan was substituted for Tyr92 to create a sensitive and unique optical probe in order to study the unfolding and refolding kinetics of disulfide-intact bovine pancreatic ribonuclease A by fluorescence-detected stopped-flow techniques. The stability of the Trp mutant was found to be similar to that of wild-type RNase A when denatured by heat or GdnHCl, and the mutant was found to have 85%...
متن کاملKinetic circular dichroism shows that the S-peptide alpha-helix of ribonuclease S unfolds fast and refolds slowly.
It is shown that circular dichroism (CD) can distinguish between the S-peptide and the S-protein fragments of RNase S at 225 nm and 235 nm. The conformational source for the strong CD at 225 nm is the S-peptide alpha-helix. The structural assignment of the CD at 235 nm is not clear but it is shown to be largely due to the S-protein moiety. This situation is utilized to monitor the kinetics of p...
متن کاملFolding core predictions from network models of proteins
Two different computational methods are employed to predict protein folding nuclei from native state structures, one based on an elastic network (EN) model and the other on a constraint network model of freely rotating rods. Three sets of folding cores are predicted with these models, and their correlation against the slow exchange folding cores identified by native state hydrogen–deuterium exc...
